when the internet broke

Slammer worm has affected 75,000 victims in 10 minutes, which has made it the fastest worm. The Slammer worm infected vulnerable computers using the scanning technique, which worked by scanning random IP hosts. The worm itself did not have a harmful payload; what caused the damage was thr denial of service attack it created (Moore et al., 2003). The implications were many, airlines had to cancel its flight because the system froze, more than 200,000 Portugues could not access the internet, American and Canadian banks were hit as most ATM were out of service. Finally, the total losses because of slammer worm were $1.2 billion in 5 days (SciShow, 2016).
