Why did slammer attack affect many organisations

As I mentioned in my previous post (When the internet broke ), the Slammer worm hit the internet and coasted companies and organisations billions of dollars (SciShow, 2016). However, the attack would not have happened if the MS029039 Patch was installed. As a matter of fact, Microsoft has released MS029039 Patch six months prior to the slammer attack, yet most organisations had not applied it at that time. Therefore, to stop the worm, all infected computers and services were cleaned, and the Patch, which fixes the vulnerability ( MS029039 ), was installed (Moore et al., 2003).
